Undeniably, Sortilege is the greatest of the French metal bands. The classic French scene is home to some considerable titans, but rising above them all is surely Sortilege. High Power, Blaspheme, ADX, Steel Angel, Vulcain, Der Kaiser, Desmonda, Death Power and the like all have their moments, but Sortilege reigns supreme. Blitzing the grand nation and beyond with their phenomenal EP in '83, in much the same way as Queensryche, the boys shredded out a flabbergasting collection of cuts displaying a frighteningly talented mix of Zouille's beautiful soaring vocal work, with the crunchiness of bitchin heavy metal guitars and well thought out solos. They continued the rampage with the likeminded Métamorphose full length, and by the time '86 rolled in, they had still not run out of steam, going for broke with Larmes de héros - a record every bit as fist pumping and commanding as any heavy metal record ever made. Sortilege’s power and prowess is on display on their third record as much as anywhere else, carried through by just a sheer command of songwriting talent, great musicianship and unbeatable vocals.
