In the grand scheme of things, grindcore and death metal had been bedfellows since the genre's inception, with Repulsion's pioneering brand already containing a healthy dose of death-thrash. But the other famous grind pioneer, Napalm Death, was making strides towards a death metal sound after two releases closer to pure grind. They replaced Lee Dorian with Benediction's Mark "Barney" Greenway and the songs started to become longer, juxtaposing grind bursts with death metal riffs. This marks an important turning point in grind, taking the now thoroughly established grindcore sound and mixing it deliberately with death metal, rather than incidentally.
