NACHTBLUT - Todschick Digi-CD

German band Nachtblut mixes dark metal with classical elements, new wave and even western influences. This is wrapped up in rousing rhythms, heavy riffs and catchy, sometimes almost poppy melodies. They criticise modern social issues. Death features in a number of lyrics. ‘Von Hass Getrieben’ has a serene, classically-oriented start. Songs like ‘Todschick’ and ‘Das Leben der Anderen’ are great to roar along to. The changes between musical styles are sometimes quirky, as in ‘Stirb Langsam’ which features folk: live, this will be a great experience. The same goes for ‘Mein Ist Die Hölle’, although it is a bit much at times. The cool turn to a small played part in ‘Schneller Als Der Tod’ is quite surprising.
Askeroth’s striking vocals can occasionally be a little too overpowering. The grim sound forms a special combination with the beautiful stacked vocals/choir singing. The low vocals/storytelling are warm in colour, the wordless grunts are fantastic. The contrasts and twists between lighter elements and the darker music are good. ‘Todschick’ is an exceptional and diverse album.
