Peaceville has deemed the time ripe for a third My Dying Bride compilation album, possibly to reach a larger audience for this quarter-of-a-century old British death/doom outfit, and probably to milk some additional cash from the fans. Now, I didn't mind being milked (for cash!) when Peaceville offered to sell me Meisterwerks I and II, because they both include rare material I don't have on other releases, and this is where III fails for me - there is nothing here I don't already have. That being said, I'll try and review this for people who may wish to check out out My Dying Bride for the first time, and whether such a compilation is worth it (after all, you can listen to any track from their entire discography, plus countless live versions, on Youtube).

If you buy this set, you get the two previous Meisterwerks (yes, the already released compilations from 2000 and 2001) so this should turn off anyone who already owns Parts I and II. For fans, these discs were interesting for presenting demo versions of some classics ("Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium", "The Grief of Age", "Vast Choirs", and "Catching Feathers"), a few cover songs (the band's rendition of Portishead's "Roads" is breathtaking in my opinion), a bonus track from the Japanese edition of 34.788%...Complete as well as a remix of "Grace Unhearing". The rest of these two discs is a presentation of the band's discography up to and including material from 2001's The Dreadful Hours. If you are new to the band, this selection of tracks offers a good look at the many sides of the band's music, from the majestic "The Crown of Sympathy" to the stripped down beauty of "Two Winters Only"
