MUTILATOR - Immortal Force CD
Greyhaze Records edition.
Here I review a proto-death metal classic studio full-length from Brazil‘s southeastern capital city of Belo Horizonte. The record that I talk about is called “Immortal Force,” Mutilator‘s debut offering, released in 1987. This classic stands as a significant milestone in the Brazilian thrash/death metal scene, often overshadowed by titans like early Sepultura, Vulcano, and Sarcófago. Despite that fact that was mentioned, this material still wins a great deal of respect and recognition from the fans for its raw energy and ferocity.
Mutilator‘s sound on this record is a messy combination of thrash elements and early death metal ingredients, which is characterized by the number of razor-sharp guitar tones and frenzied drumming. The production is obviously unpolished that it’s giving an almost live feel to the materials. This lo-fi aesthetic, while perhaps a result of limited resources and a nascent studio environment, complements the aggressive and primitive nature of the music, reminiscent of early recordings by their contemporaries.
I highly recommend this release to anyone looking for an authentic and brutal proto-death metal experience from the late ’80s. “Immortal Force” is a must-have for your collection!
