ETERNAL ROT - Moribound CD

Already by this point I would usually be satisfied, since death metal of this sort has never been known for finessing individual cuts, but I’m pleased to say that I’d like to introduce a few details that really take Moribound to the next level. Opener 'Summoned from Moribund Delusions' not only adds in a subtle organ solo around midway through to really highlight the desperate situation, but also kicks off with a ridiculously reverbed “drum solo” - not quite 'Painkiller', just pure, crushing percussive groove. 'Gestures Never Recalled' intriguingly changes tack as well, a booming fog-horn kind of sound entering along with dissonant guitar ambience as it gradually winds down. Some harder-hitting moments also lie within 'Reflected in Perpetual Waves of Despair', some of which even remind me of underrated Czech group From Beyond, so the album goes through all the possibilities open to this sound. I didn’t reckon one of my favourites this year would be a zombie death doom album, but I guess that’s the thing about zombie attacks - always unexpected!
