Stylistically, Release from Agony loses out on the more unique qualities that the first two albums had like the dark NOWBHM/power metal-infused speed metal riffs coalescing into some rather soaring, razor-sharp songs. With where Kreator and Sodom were going following their more bestial origins, Destruction going even harder on that sound – and especially with another guitarist to keep things going – would’ve given them an edge. In a way, it’s a bit dirty to consider this one my favorite Destruction album. But it’s all on the execution, and execution-wise, it not only avoids those moments where Mike kinda writes himself into a corner and just hopes for the best, but showcases his (and Harry’s) overall ingenuity when going through these ridiculously melodic, technical variants on the usual Bay Area thrash sound. Not that they ever escaped from their base sound, as shown in “Sign of Fear” and the titular song, but much of the rest of the album does find itself within the realm of Germans showing the Bay Area “no motherfucker, this is how you do it”.
