While Pestilence weren't shying away from the usual death metal topics of its time, Consuming Impulse has more of a hell on earth feeling than anything else. ‘’Dehydrated’’ opens up with oppressive tremolo riffs attacking with full force and quickly goes through several puzzling, yet threatening sections with no resurrection in sight. Martin van Drunen howls like a man who has gone astray in the desert and if you struggle to imagine the horrors of such an experience as the track progresses, I’m afraid you’re an unimaginative loser. ‘’Suspended Animation’’ might hints the last characteristics found on Malleus Maleficarum, but it’s clear the band had already changed into a different beast around this time. The guitar tones sound more fierce, vocals have become more intense and spooky keys haunt over a sequence of mad-thrashing riffs crashing down with full velocity. The result is absolutely frightening – and all that without the mention of zombies or Satan. Brilliant!
